Who a 500 GB drive is for

500 GB balances cost and space for student laptops, HTPCs, and a modest game library on one volume. Photographers sometimes use it for a working set while archives sit on larger disks.

500 GB hard drive vs SSD

500 GB SSDs are widely available and often beat HDDs on speed and power use. HDDs at this size can still be cheaper in absolute dollars, but price per TB on spinning disks is usually better at 2 TB and up, compare both columns in the table.

What to look for in a 500 GB drive

  • Form factor: 2.5-inch for laptops and many externals, 3.5-inch for desktop HDD bays.
